England World Cup Glory 2010
|
The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, which is the top international football tournament. It's being held in South Africa and will start 11th June and finish 11th July 2010. The qualification process for the tournament started August 2007 with 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams taking part which matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations.
This is the first time ever that a World Cup tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding war. This decision left the Oceania Football Confederation as the only confederation yet to host the FIFA World Cup. Italy are the defending champions. The draw for the finals took place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town.

|
The England football team are one of only seven national teams to have won the World Cup, which happened in 1966 when we hosted the finals against West Germany winning 4–2 in extra time. Since then our best performance at a World Cup was reaching the semi-finals in 1990, where we lost out to West Germany on penalties!
Although most national teams around the world represent a sovereign state, the four Home Nations which form the United Kingdom are each represented separately at international tournaments.
